Charles X Gustav crosses the frozen Belt.
The wall painting, part of a cycle of 142 images commissioned by King Maximilian II (*1811, crowned 1848, †1864) commissioned in the BNM, shows the spectacular march across the Belt undertaken by Charles X on 10 February 1658. During the battle that followed, two companies of German mercenaries broke through the ice and drowned. The painting depicts the Danish King Frederick III presenting his sword to the victorious Charles X Gustav.
