KALTENBERG CASTLE – BIRTHPLACE OF THE ROYAL BRANDS
Kaltenberg Castle, the royal residence and home of Luitpold Prince of Bavaria is situated in the heart of Upper Bavaria. The castle is the headquarters of the Schloss Kaltenberg Group with its companies, Schloss Kaltenberg Königliche Holding and König Ludwig International. The global patents and licensing agreements of the royal family are pooled at an organisational level under these umbrella companies.
The neo-gothic castle, home to the brewery since 1871, is the place of origin of the royal speciality beers which are produced and sold under licensing agreements around the world under the brand names of Kaltenberg, König Ludwig Weissbier and König Ludwig Dunkel. These Bavarian speciality beers are brewed at Kaltenberg Castle right up to the present day.
During the past 30 years, the castle has gained international prominence thanks to the world’s biggest jousting tournament, the Kaltenberger Ritterturnier. This takes place every year on three weekends in July in the castle’s own arena which can seat more than ten thousand. During this time, the entire castle grounds are taken back to the Middle Ages.
Last but not least, there are also two restaurants within the castle grounds which are known far beyond the region’s borders – Schloss Kaltenberg Bräustüberl and Ritterschwemme zu Kaltenberg – which not only celebrate haute-Bavarian-cuisine, but also the royal beers.
