MUSEUM DER BAYERISCHEN KÖNIGE – LIVING FAMILY HISTORY AT THE FOOT OF THE ROYAL CASTLES

In September 2011, the Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds opened the Museum der bayerischen Könige in the former Grandhotel Alpenrose on the shores of the idyllic Alpsee lake. The history of the Wittelsbach family – from its beginnings to the present day – is recounted in a vivid and exciting way over two-floors of the magnificent art nouveau building and an exhibition area of approximately 1,200 square metres.

The permanent exhibition, within sight of the two famous castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, has been designed as an interactive tour. Along with a walk-in family tree, guests can also look forward to around 160 precious original exhibits. The outstanding items include the dinner service manufactured by the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg for the golden wedding anniversary of King Ludwig III and his wife, Maria Theresa of Austria-Este, as well as the splendid centrepiece at the wedding of King Maximilian II of Bavaria to Princess Marie of Prussia in 1842. The exhibition focusses mainly on the lives of King Maximilian II and his legendary son, King Ludwig II.

With the Museum der bayerischen Könige, a place has been created within sight of the Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles, where thousands of international visitors have the opportunity to deepen their understanding and learn the most important information about the Wittelsbach family.
