PRINCE REGENT LUITPOLD OF BAVARIA ‒ THE LAST KNIGHT
As a down-to-earth regent, passionate hunter and nature enthusiast, as a philanthropist and patron of the arts, Prince Regent Luitpold is the perfect representative of the Golden Age of Bavaria at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century.
During his reign from 1886, the state experienced a long period of peace, economic recovery and cultural flowering. Under his patronage, Munich developed into a widely-acclaimed art and cultural metropolis which began to attract guests from all four corners of the earth. Prince Regent Luitpold’s reign was characterised by great modesty, chivalry, a passion for customs and hunting traditions and human kindness. It was the complete opposite to the splendid solitude of his predecessor, King Ludwig II.
With its cheerful conviviality and joie-de-vivre, the period of rule of the Prince Regent is still today often lovingly referred to as the »good old days«.

THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA
Luitpold’s reign came during a period characterised by radical social upheaval. It is not without reason that the end of the 19th century is referred to as the »Fin de Siècle«, a turning point and the dawn of a new era of great change.

CUTURAL HEYDAY
The period of rule of the Prince Regent is often referred to as the Golden Age of Bavaria. Luitpold’s reign was characterised by a long period of peace and was a heyday for both culture and science.

ERA OF PEACE
Although he only began his reign at the age of 65, it still lasted for a quarter-of-a-century. The period of rule of the Prince Regent is quite rightly regarded as one of the most peaceful in the history of Bavaria.
