The hearts of the Bavarian rulers have been resting in the Chapel of Mercy at Altötting since Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria. The royal couple’s heart urns (cardiotaphs) have also been there since 1921. Ludwig III personally brought the heart of his wife, Marie Therese, who had died at Wildenwart on 3 February 1919, to Altötting shortly before his own death (Sárvár, 18 October 1921).
